Your car must be in perfect technical condition. The brakes, lights, tyres and engine need regular checks.

Driving with and without a trailer

There are special rules for driving a car alone or with a trailer. Braking, taking bends and reversing need extra knowledge and practice.

As a driver, you must be fit in body and mind. Good eyes, fast reactions and focus help you drive safely. Stress or tiredness can also change how you drive.

People as a risk

Most accidents happen because people make mistakes. Distraction, alcohol, drugs or tiredness make you drive much worse. If you drive carefully and think ahead, you lower these risks a lot.

Traffic laws

You apply for your licence at the Straßenverkehrsamt. The road traffic rules (StVO) say how everyone on the road must behave. This includes speed limits, who goes first and what happens when you break the rules.

Roads and railway crossings

There are different types of roads, for example country roads, motorways and city streets. Be extra careful at railway crossings. Trains always go first there.

Right of way and traffic control

Right-of-way rules decide who goes first. They keep traffic moving. You learn the rule “right before left” (cars from the right go first). You also learn priority signs and the rules at roundabouts.

Traffic signs tell you how to behave on the road. They warn you about dangers. They tell you what you must do or must not do.

Other road users

You share the road with other people. Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists have their own rules and habits. Older people, children and people with disabilities need extra care.

Speed and stopping distance

You always need the right speed. There are clear speed limits in town, outside town and on the motorway. You must also keep enough distance to the car in front, so you can react in time.

Driving manoeuvres

When you start, turn, overtake or change lanes, you must look carefully. Check your mirrors and look over your shoulder. Always use your indicator.

Parking and stopping

When you park or stop, you must follow the rules. There are special rules for pedestrian zones, no-parking areas and disabled parking spaces.

Theory test every Tuesday
First you pass our practice test. Then we register you online at TÜV. After that, you can take the theory test any Tuesday without an appointment.
